5 tips for improving your spiritual wellbeing

It’s a time of great frustration for most people – whether that comes from being worried sick about the COVID-19 pandemic, being forced apart from loved ones due to travel restrictions, or even having financial worries as the global economy tumbles. Feel stuck? Feel like nothing is in your control? You’re not alone. Regardless of what your religious views are, perhaps you should turn your focus to spiritual wellbeing.

Put simply, spiritual wellbeing is connecting to something that’s higher than yourself. The self-transcendent feeling that you get from this can enhance wellness as it fills you with emotions like peace, contentment, appreciation, inspiration, love, and many others. As we know, feeling good does wonders for your physical and mental health. Without further ado, our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand will share with us 5 mental health tips for spiritual enhancement.

  1. No matter how difficult things get, focus on the positive aspects

There are many things in life that are out of your hand. It may bother you, but what good would constantly worrying about it do? On the contrary, the effects of stress on one’s health are well documented. Ever get headaches and have trouble sleeping when you’re stressed? Or reaching for the bag of chips or the bottle of alcohol when you’re unable to cope? These are just some of the effects of stress, which can lead to a whole host of physical, mental, and behavioral issues. No matter how difficult things get, distract yourself by thinking of happy and positive thoughts.

  1. Want to be happier? Learn to practice gratitude.

Research from psychologists at Harvard University show that those who express gratitude are more likely to experience positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build stronger relationships. In short, gratitude can make you feel happier, whether you apply it to the past (being appreciative for things in your childhood), present (not taking things that occur for granted), and future (maintain a hopeful and optimistic attitude). If you’re not sure where to start, journaling has become an increasingly popular tool for practicing gratitude. Or, you can always start by making it a point to say ‘thank you’ in your daily life.

  1. Let go of all the unnecessary baggage to feel lighter

There comes a point in our lives where we have to let go of all the unnecessary baggage: the hurt of the past, angry emotions, as well as unfulfilled expectations and dreams. It’s easier said than done, but it’s extremely important and you’ll feel so much lighter having done that. To be able to let go and enjoy the present, you’ll need to be self-aware. Meditation, mindfulness, yoga, breathing exercises, or other similar activities can help you achieve this. Or if you’d prefer, you can seek out a therapist to guide you through your emotions.

  1. Believe in the power of giving and spread joy to others

You know that feeling – when you do something for someone that puts a smile on their face? The kind of warm feeling you get from this is so powerful, more than if you were calculative and expected something in return. And it’s not just anectodal. The American Psychological Association found that selfless volunteering may have a significant impact on one’s lifespan. Though of course, if the benefits to the self become the main motive for volunteering then it negates the purpose of selfless volunteering.

  1. Treat your body like a temple: eat well, exercise regularly, practice self-care, and seek medical help when needed.

Have you heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’? That’s right, if you fill yourself up with nasty things you’re only going to feel poorly, so consider switching to healthier alternatives. Likewise, exercising regularly can increase endorphins or the ‘feel good hormone’.You can also try self-care rituals like maintaining a regular sleep routine, taking proper lunch breaks at work, going to the spa or getting a massage, etc. What’s more, make sure to notice any changes in your body, seeking medical help early on to prevent the problem from worsening.
